Antique & vintage
Examples of antique piggy banks
An antique bank (Latin: antiquus = old) is an old collectible item.
It is an object that represents a previous era or time period in human society. It is common practice to define "antique", as applying to objects of at least 100 years old. The only real rule concerning the definition of the word antique comes from the US customs office, that considers antique as anything 100 years old. Piggy banks dated before 1918 in my collection are antique.
Examples of vintage piggy banks
I have defined piggy banks of an age between 50-60 to a 100 years old as vintage. I decided to connect my definition for piggybanks to the formal one for clothing. So generally speaking, earthenware which was produced before 1918 is referred to as antique and from the 1920's to 1960's is considered vintage. Retro, short for retrospective, or "vintage style" usually refers to earthenware that imitates the style of the previous era.
