Denmark has a rich history in pottery factories. Concerning piggy banks Knabstrup is well known. Nice piggy banks with the bottom stoneware and top glaze, as Muggins in the UK does. The bottom is rubbed with wax and then the piggy is submerged in the glaze or covered with it. When firing the wax melts away. The specialist in Knabstrup piggy banks is Vibeke Kristensen.

Germany + GDR / Poland

• When does is a piggy bank originate in Germany? When it is written on the belly, as in the case of Ritzenhoff piggy’s. Most Gluckschweinchen (relatively easy to recognize) are German or Austrian. And Goebel is as German as German can be.
  

• Piggy banks from the former GDR are special. Made in the Southeast near the Polish border. The same mould was used to produce a Polish piggy bank. For that reason the two Polish piggy banks I have in my collection are placed here.
